Zacchaeus Luke 19

The Story of Zacchaeus is very familiar story for all of us. By now we should know who Zacchaeus is and why this story is so popular. The story of Zacchaeus and his encounter with Jesus Christ is amazing story. The story is found in Luke Chapter 19.

Before we meet Zacchaeus, lets set up the context. So when we study the Gospel, Jesus Christ and the disciples set out from Galilee to Jerusalem. So they go from town to town and on the way, as we already know, he did many miraculous, including the 10 lepers, Raising Lazarus from the dead. He spoke with great and wisdom. For these reasons, many people gathered around him to see perform miraculous acts and hear powerful messages. And towards the last part of the  journey, Jesus Christ travels through Jericho .

One of those people, who really wanted to see Jesus Christ was this man named Zacchaeus who was a rich tax collector. And another thing we can note is that he was also very short. Maybe a dwarf. We also know that he wanted to see Jesus Christ and know who this man is.

Who is Jesus? Who is this man that everyone is talking about? I hear that he can raise the dead, I hear he set the captives free, I hear he restore the blind and the broken. I hear he can forgive and bring new life. I hear he can give hope to the hopeless. I hear he can give strength to the weak. I hear he can save the lost? Who is this Jesus Christ?

Today, everyone should be asking these question.

Because of the physical limitation Zacchaeus could not see Jesus Christ as rest of the people. But he wanted to know who Jesus was. He has heard about Jesus Christ. He has heard about the great and wonderful, miraculous things he had being doing. He wanted to see and witness this great man for himself. But if stood in the crowd, he would probably see only portions of Jesus Christ, not the entire figure.

Zacchaeus was smart and he couldn’t this opportunity just pass by. He climbed up a sycamore tree and go a good view of this man named Jesus Christ. A clear view of Christ. We should have a clear view of Christ. We have heard of him, but we need to seem him clearly. Hearing from another person about Christ is great and first step of a believer. But there comes a time when you want to experience Christ for yourself. So we need a special encounter with Jesus Christ on our own. Do you know want to know who Jesus Christ? Do you want to experience his power and free you.

“Zacchaeus come down quickly”. Jesus calls him by his name. Jesus Christ knows everything about him. He knew Zacchaeus was in need of Salvation. Christ knows everything about his. He knows our Name. He knows our needs and wants. Our desires. He knows us. . He knows our pains and struggles. He knows when we go through hardship.

God is all knowing God. He is there to help us. He is here to lift us up. Jesus is ready give hope to those who are feeling hopeless. He is here to give strength to those are weak. He is here to give salvation to those who are lost. Jesus is here. He is passing by. Are you seeing him? Are we seeing for all he is. Don’t let this opportunity pass us by.

Zacchaeus was given a opportunity. It was all up to him. He had a decision to make. Either become right or continue living in the dark. Many of us face this decision every day. Do you want to come to him or loose him. God is asking to come closer to him.Have a personal relationship with him.

James 4:8 Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.

1 Samuel 2:30 Those who honor me, I will honor them.

But we need to honor him. We need to make things right. We need to turn our lives over to him. Give up things that God does not like. Then we will see the amazing things that God has for us. HE will restore the things which was once lost. He fill the things which was once empty. He will rebuilt the relationship which was broken. Our God is Good. Our God is able. His mercy is great.

Zacchaeus knew that if he made everything right, he knew that Jesus Christ had the authority and power to restore him. He knew his Authority. Know the Authority of Jesus Christ. Know his power to make things right again. Zacchaeus realized if he corrected his ways, he will receive joy from this man named Jesus Christ. It was his surrender to the authority of Jesus Christ that saved him.

God is ready to change our lives. God is ready to bring new things into your lives. God is ready to fill our house with Joy. Zacchaeus made the decision to follow him and salvation was in his house. Today salvation and joy belongs in our homes. Not sadness and sorrow. Not fear and doubt. When the salvation comes into our homes, our home is filled with Joy. Even in mist of hardships, our homes should be filled with joy. Because we sever a living God, we sever a powerful God. Who can make the great mountains plain. Who can make a way through the sea.

If your home and your family is missing the joy, then let us surrender our family into this house. Know that Jesus Christ has the power to restore things. He can take us out of the old places. Bring a new wine out of you. A new person.
You can start saying..

Goodbye regret
Goodbye alone
Goodbye to emptiness
Say hello to beautiful
Goodbye afraid
Goodbye ashamed
Goodbye to hopelessness
Say hello to beautiful (To beautiful)Hello, hello, hello beautiful ”

MercyMe Hello Beautiful

Let us draw near to Jesus Christ. There is power and freedom in Jesus Christ.

Luke Chapter 4

Jesus started the ministry under the power
of Spirit. Before he was surrounded by
disciples, before he went into the temple,
before he did miracles, he was filled with
power of spirit. The Spirit of God was with
him and until the last moment he was on earth.
The Holy Spirit was essitenial part of his
ministry and was working in the background
throughout his ministry. We can say, that
it wasn’t just Jesus and 12 disciples, but
the Spirit of God was very involved.

For a successfuly ministry it requires
infilling of the holy spirit and the power,
its involvement.

Jesus was always in sync with the Holy Spirit
and was led by the spirit. Jesus never did anything
apart from the spirit, spirit was always with him.
He went where the spirit lead him.

In Acts 1:8 it mentions the power will come
first and then holy Ghost, which will sent
the anionted to be witness of Jesus Christ
around the world.

Application
Starting our day with the power of the Spirit
can make a difference in the our lives.
Instead of waiting for the church service
or certin time in the day, if we are able seek
the power of spirit early and at the beginning, then
everything else will be fine.

What does the power of Spirit
– Gives Men courage to Rebuke Sin
Mi 3
– Mighteir than Phyiscal Force
– Enables Men to speak with Authority Acts 4:33
– Healing influences Act 19
v16
Jesus grew up in Nazareth and regularly visited the local
synagogue. Jesus went to church and took part in orginzed
service just like we do today.
The services started with invocation of God’s blessing,
recetations of Hebrews confession of Faith, deut 6 4-9 ,11:13-21.
followed by prayer, then reading from the law and passage from
the prophets.Followed by a breif sermon , then comes the benediction
done by the preist.

v18 Reading of the passage:
Once again, the bible empahizes the impartation of power of the spirit
upon him.
– God anointed Jesus Isiah 61 1-12

1. To Preach the Gospel to the Poor.
2. Heal the Brokenhearted
3. Proclaim Liberty to the Captives
4. Recovery of the sight to blind
5. Set at liberty those who are oppressed.
6. To Proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.

Galatians Chapter 2

v1.

After 14 Years  Paul goes to Jerusalem(Acts 15:1)

The Gospel taught by Paul was revealed through God alone.  The Gospel that Paul preaches is direct revelation from God.  God has chosen Paul to preach to the gentiles(v.9).  The great commission was given to Paul, other than the great commission that was previously given to the disciples.

Jesus vs. Paul. Do they preach the same Gospel?

Act 15 “The Debate In Jerusalem”

v2.
Paul set the Gospel he was preaching to the gentiles in front of Peter, James, elders and pharisees ( The influential). Paul made sure the Gospel he taught was in agreement with the one Peter and James taught. If there was a disagreement, then Paul says then I am running in vain, i enduring hardship for no reason.

v.3 He introduces Titus  to defend his claim. Titus was a Greek and was a part of the audience during the council in Jerusalem. Because they let Titus go without being circumcised, it proves that everyone was in agreement that circumcision for the Gentiles was not necessary.

v4. But the pharisees disapproved the work of Paul and required that all Gentiles should circumcise and follow the law of Moses.   Acts 15 .

Did this cause any divisions among the early Christians. Yes, Even after 14 years, the same people are going to churches planted by Paul, to proclaiming the Gospel of “Salvation through Law”.

v5.  Paul did not yield to them, because he makes his stance Galatians 1:12.  The Truth was revealed through Christ, and he did not even bother listening to them.

v6. remember the poor. Jesus was very mindful of people there poor and hopeless.  as follows he asked all his diciples to care for the poor (Mathew  24)

Jesus vs. Paul. Do they preach the same Gospel?

Jesus never talked about Grace and Paul all he talks about is Grace through Faith.
Jesus mentions  the Gospel of Kingdom will be preached around the world. Mathew 24:13  (VideoMark 1:14

Peter agrees with Paul on the teaching that everyone is saved only by Grace. Verse Acts 15:11

At the Potters House

Jeremiah 18: 16

18 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord: “Go down to the potter’s house, and there I will give you my message.” So I went down to the potter’s house, and I saw him working at the wheel. But the pot he was shaping from the clay was marred in his hands; so the potter formed it into another pot, shaping it as seemed best to him.

Then the word of the Lord came to me. He said, “Can I not do with you, Israel, as this potter does?” declares theLord. “Like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in my hand, Israel. If at any time I announce that a nation or kingdom is to be uprooted, torn down and destroyed, and if that nation I warned repents of its evil, then I will relent and not inflict on it the disaster I had planned. And if at another time I announce that a nation or kingdom is to be built up and planted, 10 and if it does evil in my sight and does not obey me, then I will reconsider the good I had intended to do for it.

Israel once again turned their back to God. Gods comes to Jeremiah and speaks to Jeremiah. Tell the people of Israel to come back to me, and I will make them great as they once were.  Tell them to repent and I will not destroy them as planned.  God has a covenant with the people of Israel, through the promises of Abraham. But God in sovereignty can destroy a generation of Israelite  in order to keep his promises alive.  Despite the disobedience, God loves them and wants them back.

God says to Jeremiah, Go to the potters house and there I will give you a message. A message is sometimes  shown through event, situations, people  around you. It does not always have to be God speaking to you with a direct voice to voice communication.

God says to Jeremiah, I can restore what once was broken as the potter restores the ruined clay. God wants Jeremiah to know, that God is above all, God is the creator  of all things and can also renew what was once planned for destruction.

A Marred clay is ruined clay, if it looses it ability to form a solid structure, it’s thrown away on  a field called the Potters Field. This is where are all the broken pots that cannot be used for its purpose end up.  But a good pot, such a flower pot or vase is used for a purpose that will hold contents.

Isaiah 64:8  But now, O Lord, Thou are our father; we are the clay, and thou are our potter; and we all are the work of thy hand.

We are the work of the Lord. He is our Potter, and made each one of us for a purpose. Because God is perfect, the work of thy hand is perfect to do his will.  God made us as it seem best to him. God made us knowing when  a situation arises, you are the best person fit for overcoming those situation and bring glory to

God.

When he made  us , he saw us in that situation and knew I was the best for this situation and to overcome.

But the people of Israel could realize this. There are suppose to the greatest nations. Kings are suppose to bow to down to them.  But because of their failure and disobedience, they has yet to come.

God is faithful to his people and but surely the people remained unfaithful to him.  God has always been faithful , the question are we faithful to him.  He had thoughts about us and loved us before we came into existence.  God made us bigger than anything else in the world.

We are his most precious creation, and most loved.  Humans are bigger and more majestic than the universe.

Ephesians 2:10

For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

We are his handiwork, workmanship and masterpiece.

God did not mass produce us , he took thought, time and care to knit us while we were still in our mothers womb ( PS 139)  .  He took dust off Ground and formed us into being (Genesis 2 )

Psalm 100: 3  Know that the lord is God. It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people , the sheep of his pasture.

We belong to Christ, and through him we belong to God as part of his creation.   He has sent us son, to be our Shepard, so that the almighty can watch over us.

When the Shepard is watching there is no reason to be worried. When we become lost, he will come find us.

God has something great in store for those who turn to God.

If you want joy , God says to “enter the potters house.

If you want peace and comfort in your life, “enter the potters house”.

If you want security ” enter the potters house”.

Psalms 139 – Our personal belonging to God.

Compassion

Mark Chapter 8: 2

8 During those days another large crowd gathered. Since they had nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples to him and said, 2 “I have compassion for these people; they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat. 3 If I send them home hungry, they will collapse on the way, because some of them have come a long distance.”

If you do not know what’s going on here,  lots of people have gathered to hear and learn from Jesus. They have been there for 3 days getting feed with spiritual teaching but physically without Food, and Jesus knows this and has concerns for their health. He knows that if the people go back home at the current state, they will collapse on their way. So as we know this story, Jesus is provided with  7 loves and few small fishes , bless the food, and feeds it to the 4000.  But today I want the focus to be not on the miracle ,but rather on the word “Compassion” .

Define : Feeling of sympathy for those unfortunate.

In another words,  feeling sorry for those in need.
Anyone wants to do God’s will, go into ministry  , you must have compassion.
its was his compassion towards us that saved us from death. We are supposed to hungry and collapse on on this journey of life.  But instead because of his compassion and intense love he has for us us, he took up all the sins, and feed and clothed us with righteousness.
God’s wills for us to be witness to this beautiful love.
When Jesus looked into this crowd he just didn’t see a bunch of hungry people, from the previous
2 Corinthians 3:8
And we who with unveiled faces all reflect the lords glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever increasing glory, which
comes from the Lord, who is this Spirit

Matthew 25

The Final Judgment

31 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. 32 Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 And he will place the sheep on his right, but the goats on the left. 34 Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, youwho are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, 36 I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’ 37 Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? 38 And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? 39 And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ 40 And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers,[f] you did it to me.’

41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.’ 44 Then they also will answer, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to you?’ 45 Then he will answer them, saying, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.’ 46 And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”

Setting an Example ( Life of Leader)

1 Timothy 5:12:

Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity

Today my message is about “Setting an example”  to those that are around you: your friends, your coworkers, your brother your sister, even your father and your mother.

This verse is part of Paul’s instruction given to Timothy when he was given a special task at the church of Ephesus.  We first learn about Timothy is Acts Chapter 16.  When Paul arrived at Lystra, he met this young many named Timothy. It says he was a disciple, his mother was a believer, but his father was a greek.  People spoke good things about him. So Paul took him along on his missionaries.

While he was under the leadership of Paul, he probably began to learn how to plant churches and be leader. Eventually he was given a special task at the church of Ephesus to teach and instruct them on how to live a godly life . Now since he was a  young, many elders might have questioned him.

We are familiar with the experience that Timothy is facing. We have all been in situation where you have something to suggest or say when the  elders, but no matter how good your suggest sounds they might either ignore you or disagree it with because the words are coming from someone young.  Similar Timothy was encountering the  same issues as the youth is facing.  He probably went upto them and said, No stop believing in those fales myths. I want everyone to lift up holy hands in prayer.  Women be submissive and be quiet. I’m sure they didn’t like hear this, especially the ladies.

After that

Then he goes on to giving the overseers and the decons of the church and tell them on how to run the church.

PUT YOUR SELF IN HIS TIMOTHY’s Shoes.

Now the task that he was given was extremely hard. I don’t know how someone is suppose to do this. But there is a way.  Paul says to Timothy, don’t worry, they might not listen now. But do this. ” Set an example” .  Set an example in everything you do.

  • Set an example in Speech, meaning pay attention to the words  you say.

We know words are the most powerful tool we have. There is a saying ” Words can make or break  worlds”. Obama do not become the most powerful man in the world by shooting or use of his own physical power.

Words were even more powerful when God created the heaven and the earth.

What you say in this world dramatically the outcome of the lives around you.  Paul wants Timothy to speak the word , speak about Christ. Similarly God wants each of us to speak with humbleness . Speak the Good news.  Our Bible has many things to say about how you speak …

Ephesian 4:29

Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.

Colossians 4:6

Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.
Proverbs 18:20-21

From the fruit of a man’s mouth his stomach is satisfied; he is satisfied by the yield of his lips. Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.

Proverbs 15:4

A gentle tongue is a tree of life, but perverseness in it breaks the spirit.

 “Set and Example in Life”

Paul wanted to Timothy to live in a way that pleased  God.  Doing good deeds, helping the poor, and helpless. Life of prayer. Living according to desires not of his heart but Gods. A Life that does not confirm to this things of this world. A life so that his name is Glorified . Sometimes we get caught up in the things of this world. We are trying to fullfill our own desires when it comes to school and finding a good job.  Trying to meet the expectations. That’s okay.  But God wants his children to remember him every part of your life.  He wants you to make him part of everything single aspect of your life.  Bible tells us that we cannot survive on this world on our own.  We need help.

Mathew 4:4

‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’

We need God in everything that we do.

Set an example of Love:

Paul want Timothy to love the people around him. Sometimes these people might have hated him because he gave so many commands. But despite that, he wants Timothy to Love. He want Timothy to to love them so that when they see, it reflects the love of Jesus.  Children of God we are all called to Love one another. Even your enemies. Jealousy and hate are the roots of Evil.  But Love is of Jesus inherited by us, because Jesus lives in us.

John  1st John 4: 11.

Dear Friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God, but if we love one another God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.

Paul wants people to see the Love of Jesus through the love that Timothy has .  Jesus wants the world to see his Love, using each of one just as Timothy was used.

Endocrolgist.

Set an example of  Faith.

Faith is important. This is what keeps us moving.  That’s what kept Paul moving. Our Faith in our Jesus , gives us hope. Gives us hope to fight a battle against evil. Our faith builds and strengthen us in the time of trouble.   Paul wants to have the same Faith and also to share the faith and hope in Christ.

And last  thing Paul advices Timothy is that “Set an example”  of Purity

Purity : Important to keep your mind and your body away from its worldly desires.  Purity is a battle faced by everyone single person. Many fall into it and become unclean.  Keeping your thoughts, minds and heart after what God is going to give or has already is sometimes difficult to many people in this world. Even to believers.

When Daniel was faced with a situation where he was almost  forced to  committing adultery, he ran off.  So should Timothy, so should we.

Dear

Be diligent in the matters, give yourself wholly to them, so that everyone may see your progress.  Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.
